Comes First. I’m Vincent J. Russo.

M.S. ROBERTS-DROGN: And I’m

Victoria Roberts-Drogin. Thank you for

joining us today.

Vincent, this past season has been

just inspirational. It’s been so full of

stories that are heartwarming, and

honestly, just have changed my life just

from being part of it.

same way. So much so, that we wanted to

share the families and the resources as a

Best Of Season 7.”

going to look back at the moments that

moved us the most over this season, right

RUSSO: Out of your mind.

GORDON-SPENCER: Just out of my

3 MR. RUSSO: He has a name.

4 MS. GORDON-SPENCER: Scott Spencer.

5 – – – in September of 12; Scott. My

6 husband Scott and I, we got married in

7 September of 2012 and five months later

8 he was deploying to Afghanistan. So we

9 had just moved into a new house, and I

1 O didn’t really have a lot of Community

ill around me.

12 YOu have Choices. You Can be at 13 home and be lonely, or think, ‘Oh, my

14 husband is gone. What am I going to do?”

15 Or, you get up and do something. And I

16 was already sending him cards and Care

17 packages, and I thought maybe the other

18 guys and females in Our unit might enjoy

19 cards as well, So I just put up a note On

2O my Facebook page and six weeks later we

21 had about 17, 000 Cards.

22 MR. RUSSO: Oh, 17, OOO.

23 MS , GORDON – SPENCER : Ye S – FrO

, 24 twenty-two states.

25 MR. RUSSO: Did the mailperson

quit? Did they actually deliver 17, 000?

GORDON-SPENCER: They came in

spurt-S .

We were emailing each other,

because it’s an eight-hour time

difference. And I asked him how many

people were on Kandahar Airfield, which

is where he was stationed and he said, ‘I

can’t tell you, but a lot. ” I said,

Well, I’m going to send you 17, 000

Cards.” And he said, ‘What?” So, we

packed them up in boxes of 300 and got

them over there right in time for

Christmas.

So, we were able to incorporate

both cards and care package items because

once people found Out we were Sending

cards, people would also ask if they

could send service items, and I said yes,

Of COur Se.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Why not?

GORDON-SPENCER: So people

started dropping those at my house.

ROBERTS-DROGIN : BOXes Of

toothpaste and Socks.

MS . GORDON – SPENCER: YeS YeS

And Halloween Candy from the buybacks at

Halloween.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: That’s great.

MS . GORIDON — SIPENCER : Whi Ch. i S

great, you know, the Candy is great,

because it’s miniature.

When they go to individuals, it

doesn’t just go to an individual. It may

get mailed to an individual, but you

know, people Come. Other people and

their unit COme Over and they get to

share all this Stuff, so it’s a sense of

Creating your Own Small Community.

Wherever you are, whether you’re

in-country or Overseas, it’s a tremendous

feeling of allowing an individual to be a

part of their own community with handing

these things Out, so it was pretty

DUFF: Okay. Again, Catholic

Charities offers a wide variety of

services for Children, adults, Seniors,

but our veterans program is one of our

newest programs.

We started it about ten years ago

when the episodes of homelessness were

becoming so apparent, so we created a

program to provide housing for the

homeless veteran, and in that we also

Created housing for families because we

saw a two-tier problem.

One, of course, is the chronically

homeless veteran, who is living in the

Woods, et Cetera; and then we also saw the

families that were living in shelters

because there was no place for them to

live.

So, Catholic Charities was able to

establish some homes where we’ve been

able to put families in and again, the

families do the hard work. For us, it’s

a privilege to do it, because they

deserve a place to live.

RUSSO: And how long were you

away?

GAUSE: I was away two-and-a-

half years.

RUSSO: Transitioning to the

Page

workplace? How was that for you? Was it

difficult?

GAUSE: Well, in the

beginning it was, because they told me I

can get my job back when I came back

home, but then when I got back it wasn’t

there. It was no longer Open, but

eventually, they did give it back.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Okay. So, you

were able to go back to doing what you

were doing before.

MS : GAUSE : YeS.

RUSSO: I would think that’s an

area where it, taking skills that you

have in the military and then coming back

and trying to reconnect with the job that

you might have had before you left, it

could be difficult.

PENNA : But then September 11th

happened, and my Sister was already in

the army, and the field I was in, being a

broker, wasn’t obviously what it used to

be after September 11th, so I decided to

join the army and serve my country and

travel the World and that’s what I had

chosen to do, and I loved it.

MR . AMAT FITANO : We provide

employment opportunities for veterans.

We provide housing for veterans and their

families. We have a Vets Bill Program

that we’re partnered with. We’re

partnered with a lot of agencies. The

Vets Bill Program, we’re partnered with

United Way of Long Island, which that’s a

great program, because it’s free to the

veterans, and it’s men and women and it’s

an insulation; Weatherization program

which could lead to a higher education, a

lot of jobs in the solar industry.

Training, we provide a lot Of

training; also, in partnership with the

VA and with the Department of Labor.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Frank, I

imagine you and Gustina have slightly

different perspectives on this, but what

would each of you say is the most

powerful difference that women face,

transitioning back after service?

AMALFITANO: Well, most women,

they have a lot more challenges than the

1 male veterans, and particularly a single

2 mom. A veteran woman that has children,

3 that’s a tremendous challenge.

And then also, a woman veteran

5 that’s experienced war. I could tell you

6 this firsthand, there’s a lot of issues,

7 but being in a Combat Scenario, you carry

8 that with you for the rest of your life.

9 MS. ROBERTS – DROGIN : Gustina i T

1 O know you had spoken a little bit to us

11 about that, coming home and not even

12 realizing that you had post traumatic – –

14 MS. PIENNA: PTSD.

15 MS. ROBERTS – DROGIN : YeS.

16 MS. PENNA: I know When I first

17 came home, there weren’t as many programs

18 as there are now. So, coming to terms

19 with it, it was difficult and it took a

2O while, but by the grace of God I did come

21 to terms with it and found my way to the

22 VA and it made me stronger and start the

23 healing process, so I could be a mother

24 to my son .

25 MS. HEINSOHN: Linda was asking for

1 a long time to become a Girl Scout.

2 MR. RUSSO: Oh, great.

3 MS. HEINSOHN: And I investigated,

4 and although any girl can join any troop,

5 it really wasn’t appropriate for her, SO

6 I thought I would start my own, and I

7 just gear it towards the girls and their

8 abilities.

9 MR. RUSSO: Wow, that’s fantastic.

1 O MS. ROBERTS-DROGIN: How big is the

l troop?

12 MS. HEINSOHN: I only have four

* 1.3 girls, but they’re very, very active.

14 MS. ROBERTS-DROGIN: It makes it

15 very special; there’s a lot of attention.

16 MS. RUSSO: They have so many

17 projects they work on, and I – – –

18 MS. ROBERTS-DROGIN: Well, I can see

19 from this beautiful – – –

2O MR. RUSSO: Yes, let’s See. Let’ S

21 see. Let’s see it, if we can hold that

22 up. Just hold that up for a minute and

23 talk about what’s going with all this – –

25 MS ROBERTS-DROGIN: There are a lOt

of badges on there.

HEINSOHN: These are the badges

that they work for. They’ve done first

aid, COOking, baking. We had a tea party.

They did a social tea. Exercise. We’ve

done it over the years, and of Course the

Cookie Sales.

MS ROBERTS-DROGIN: There’ S a Ot

on the back, too, I think.

RUSSO: The back?
HEINSOHN: The Se are the

patches. These are just the fun patches.

RUSSO: Where’s the yoga patch?

RUSSO: There it is, because I

understand that you love yoga.

ROBERTS – DIRIOGIN : I see a couple

on there, right? Great.

RUSSO : WOW.
ROBERTS-DROGIN: Wonderful.
RUSSO: Yes, that S – – – What

are you going to do when you’re Out Of

space?

HEINSOHN: This is their junior

vest. They just bridged up to cadets, so

2 MR. RUSSO: Oh, this is the fancy

MS. HEINSOHN: We start loading this

15 of the troop leaders. So much time and

16 energy.

18 Without them, I would not have the best

19 job in the world and so I thank every

2O single One of you out there; thank you for

21 being Girl Scout volunteers.

23 MS. CERAVOLO: Edith is One of Our

24 very special stars. She has really

25 stepped up when sometimes other people

have not been able to do what she’s done and

we’re very, very grateful for her

leadership in establishing a special,

regular after-school troop for girls.

I mean, sending out 300, 000 letters to the

serving in action and their families.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: And it started

from writing to her husband.

MR, RUSSO : Incredible.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: And She’s a

delicious soul. She just – – – yes.

impressed me so much you know, Gustina and

you know, their Commitment to, no matter

what happens, you move ahead to make your

family Safe and healthy and happy and

whatever you need to do, you do.

RUSSO: Serving our country.

MS, ROBERTS-DROGIN: YeS.

RUSSO: Just remarkable, SO

strong. Women who are so strong and

MS, ROBERTS-DROGIN: Yes. And then

here, again, Courage. And the Girl Scouts

being a legacy Of inclusi On.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Yes, and also

seeing a need, figuring Out a way to make

something happen that would make your

family better and doing it, and that’s

what really impressed me about all of

these WOmen; all of these ShoWS .

RUSSO: Wonderful.
ROBERTS-DROGIN: It’s inspiring.

This season, we had three shows

that really, the message to us was a

Community of Caring.

ROBERTS – DIRIOGIN : I think

people who went out of their way to

Create Communities for others that were

safe and loving and no matter what it

cost to them to do it?

RUSSO: Right.
ROBERTS-DROGIN: You know? We

had the issue of, how do you take care of

your parents? We had students from St.

John’s who went to Peru.

RUSSO: That’s right.
ROBERTS-DROGIN: TO Care for

those kids who really had no one, and

then we had Hedy and Eric and Joanne Page

who gave back in the prison systems based

1 on their own history. It was very powerful.

2 Very powerful.

3 MR. RUSSO: Incredibly powerful.

4 Let’s take a look.

7 MR. DILILTO: Her situation now is

8 people have asked me, did you ever think

9 of putting her in an institution. And I

1 O say, listen – – – I say, it’s not about

11 putting her in an institution. I Say,

12 she is comfortable at home. She’s not

13 comfortable going into something like

14 that at this time.

15 It could come to a point when she’s

16 older, I still wouldn’t put her in an

17 institution. I would have somebody come

18 to the house to take Care of her, but at

19 this moment she’s not going to be

2O tolerant of that right now, and it would

21 just be too overwhelming for her.

22 MS. ROBERTS-DROGIN: So, this is a

23 situation where you really – – – there ‘ S

24 a clear answer in your mind; you want to

25 keep her at home.

to Care for her at home.

DILILLO: Absolutely. It S

from a religious standpoint. I know that

God is calling me to do this. My father

felt that always.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: And you’ve

been doing it.

DILILLO: Yes. And We’ve been

doing it. I feel that Grace every day.

RUSSO: So, as you are taking

care of your mother, there are many

family members taking care of their

parents at home.

So, Chris, you’ve got your mother

in-law.

C. CARDINAL: Yes. My mother-in

law is there.

RUSSO: Residing there.
C. CARDINAL: For about a year

RUSSO: – – – home with you for?

CARDINAL: Eighteen years.

RUSSO: Eighteen years.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Ye S.

RUSSO: So, first of all, God

CARDINAT: Yes, she helped me

my kids were young.

RUSSO: Right.

CARDINAL: She was a Godsend

to me, actually. We got along very well.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: That’s

Wonderful.

C. CARDINAL: It was a very hard

transition for us when she decided to Stay.

It was her decision to stay.

RUSSO: And she decided; which

is so interesting, right?

C. CARDINAL: Uh-huh.
RUSSO: And, why?
C. CARDINAL: I think part of

it was that she could not get out as She

used to before. She used to have a

scooter. She used to go around the

neighborhood. She couldn’t do that as

much anymore. She couldn’t get up and

down the Stairs without assistance;

different things.

RUSSO; SO Social Work becomes

really important in that regard.

So, Danielle, you do that stuff,

don’t you?

ROBERTS-DROGIN: What’s your

favorite part of what you do for the

patients?

RANK: Just being able to meet

them and kind of hear their background and

their stories and where they came from.

And like you said, it’s very uncommon for

the patients themselves to say that they

want to stay long-term, but some actually

do and trying to help with that transition

and having the family understand that maybe

this is what is in the best interest for

their families.

MR, RUSSO: Ye S.

ROBERTS – DIROGIN : So, that S

interesting. Sometimes you sense it and

the patients sense it.

RANK: Yes. I’ve had patients

tell their families that they would like to

Stay.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: That must be

hard for the families.

RANK: Yes. So, we give them

support in that way to help them kind of

understand where their parent or their

loved one is coming from.

COSTA: The presence of our

students to the children there, they have

playmates for a week. And they have kids

that are very close to their age, some of

them that bring a lot of enthusiasm and a

lot of energy to the house. They’ll take

them to the park and for some of the kids

that aren’t mobile, they’ll go up to

their rooms, and some of the kids are

really confined to a bed, and they’ll go

upstairs and play with them. So, that’s

probably the biggest thing.

On a very practical level, they

will take the kids into Lima for doctors’

appointments; SOmetimes for hospital

Visits, therapy Visits. And that S a

very bonding experience, too, because

you’re really with them for maybe five

hours On a bus.

RUSSO: Right.
ROBERTS – DIRIOGINI: And a

tremendous, I would imagine, Sense of

accomplishment for your kids to feel like

they’ve done this. You know, that’s a

big thing.

COSTA: Overcoming a lot of

fear, absolutely.

KETCHAM: Right , the sense, W. Can I

do this?” The question, Am I capable of

this?” They come back, I think,

realizing that they’re capable of a love

that is extraordinary, really.

RUSSO: Also, I think they get

a sense of appreciation for what they

have.

COSTA: Yes, tremendous.
RUSSO: When they go and help

someone in need and especially those with

health Care issues and Special needs.

COSTA: There’s a great, and

you’ve seen this, too, there’s a great

joy in that house now.

Now, part of it is because of the

atmosphere that the founder and the

doctor that runs it , Anthony Tua Zarra, has

brought to it. There’s a great – – –

RUSSO: Yes, tell us about him.
COSTA: Sure. So, he started

this about twenty-five years ago, and he

had gone to Calcutta. On a vacation and

saw the poverty and said, I Can’t

continue to do this. So, he was teaching

‘; 13

at Emory University and had a great job and

but he said, I needed to do something

el Se. SO, he beCame a Third Order

Franciscan and went down to Peru and

started this home and really has

dedicated his life and has been there.

He comes home twice a year, but

always considers home being Tampa where

his family is, but he considers Peru his

home. He’s given children an atmosphere

of safety and an atmosphere of family.

Now, some do have families, and

their parents come and visit them.

Others don’t have families, so he’s given

them that sense of family.

KETCHAM : YeS . SOme Of the

children were brought there by their

families, from the mountains of Peru and

bringing the child there with some sort

of real medical needs. They bring the

child there, but maybe are so overwhelmed

by the thought of having to care for the

child themselves, leave the child there.

Like they sometimes leave the child there

at the Hogar. So some of the children

are, in a sense, abandoned there. Not all

of them, but Some are.

Like, we’ll hear about the parents

who bring a child and then we don’t hear

from the parents again for a couple of

years, and the question is, Will they

ever show up again, or will they even

ask, how is my child doing? So that’s

going On in the house, as Well, too.

So, Dr. Tony becomes like a father

figure in this home, and even the nurses

who work there with him and the Cooks and

those people who are there, the teacher

there, the physical therapist, he has

twenty-three, full-time employees who are

paid staff who help him as well, too.

They come in and out throughout the

week. They’re never there all at one time,

but they’re either driving or like I said,

serving in the Hogar itself. So, he has

help there, but he becomes like a father

figure to them as well.

COSTA: When you come home

it’s a very hard thing to talk about.

DANCA SMITH: It really is.

COSTA: It’s really hard to

describe what it is. And I think part of

the revelation that the Students have,

hopefully, will be, I kind of met Christ

down there in a way that I just didn’t

think would ever happen.

DANCA SMITH: Right, and how do

you verbalize that? I can’t verbalize

that at forty. How do you verbalize that

at fifteen, Sixteen-years old.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Right.
DANCA SMITH: But, I know when

I came home last year, people said, How

was it? And I would just stare at them

and say, I don’t know what to say.

And the second time around – – –

RUSSO: Where do you start?
DANCA. SMITH: Ye S. SO I Can’t

imagine a teenager being able to

verbalize such an experience.

ROBERTS-DROGIN: Life-changing.
DANCA SMITH: The rest of their

lives, they’re going to be remembering what

they did.

STANGANELLI : What I just found

so amazing, Father Rob Ketcham said, when he

brought the young people back from the

experience in Peru back to the United

States, where the culture of life is,

it’s not really part of the American

Culture.

We judge life and evaluate life

based on usefulness, rather than See the

dignity of every Single human being, and

here, these young people could see that the

sanctity of life really is there because

people who face challenges where the World

might say, well that life isn’t WOrthwhile,

that life isn’t valuable, here these young

people saw that people with Challenges and

disadvantages in life would face that with

hope, with joy, and young people now Can

see that a value of a life is based not on

what we’re able to produce or do but just

Our very being, able to experience and meet

the challenges with hope. And, indeed, I

think that’s what Family Comes First is all

about; seeing people with Challenges and

facing those challenges with hope.

RUSSO: And, we are going to

update their story, which has been so

2 fantastic; when we did this show, six

3 years ago. I can’t imagine it was that

we were working at Sing Sing, she became

fascinated by the whole thing, and now

she employs us without pay.

volunteer WOrk.

RUSSO: As Counselors?

ROBERTS-DROGIN: And together,

right? Both of you do it together.

RUSSO: Both of you, both.

I ask this question respectfully,

because you were in a Concentration Camp.

How hard was it for you to go into a

prison as a volunteer?

PAGE: Not horrible at all,

because when I was in a concentration

camp, or when I was locked up, nobody

cared. So, I figured, at least we do

something for SOme people who are in

prison. And that was the reason, because

nobody cared about me, that doesn’t mean

that I don’t care about others.

And that was the main reason

really.

JOANNE PAGE: What was amazing was

that the man we were working with

recognized that he had a past that

matched their past, and they would turn

to him for feedback on how he built a

family, and how he got through the rage.

And so there’s a role my dad plays

that none of us play, because he’s lived

through the kind of pain and rage that

people in prison are living in.
