Caregiving – A Modern Dilemma

IMG_4742Many of us face the issue of caring for our parents or a loved one as they age. There are so many decisions that have to be made. Among these difficult decisions is whether the best care for your loved one will be provided at home or in a nursing home.

Joining us on this week’s episode of Family Comes First, Caregiving – A Modern Dilemma is Nick Delillo.  Nick shares his passion and mission to provide care for his mother at home rather than in a nursing home.  He feels there is a certain level of comfort that is maintained by remaining at home, and that moving her elsewhere would be too overwhelming for her. The reality is, however, that there is a high cost of care in New York. Nick is an artist who tries to supplement his mother’s income by painting to care for her.

Also joining us on this show is Caitlyn Janicki, Vice President of The Center for Special Needs Trust Administration. Because of the high cost of care and the strict eligibility standards set by Medicaid, Caitlyn shares the benefit of the Theresa Pooled Income Trust. She explains how this trust allows for individuals to take their excess income (determined by Medicaid) and put it into an income trust. The trust can then use the income to pay for the individual’s monthly expenses such as rent, HOA fees, utilities, etc. whether at home or in a nursing home.

We also meet with Chris Cardinal and Danielle Rank, social workers at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center. They discuss how there often comes a time where you are no longer able to provide care for your loved one at home, and a higher level of care is needed. At this point, a nursing home can be the right choice to provide the additional services needed.

Additionally, Frank L. Buquicchio, JD, CELA, an elder law attorney at Russo Law Group, P.C., shares how important it is to plan in advance, whether keeping a loved one at home or providing care in a nursing home.

This show is filled with a vast amount of valuable information.  At some time or another, we will all be able to relate to the messages conveyed in this episode.
